It is quite obvious that the German carmakers are looking more into diesel engines as a way to reduce fuel consumption but the U.S. market is slightly different and specific. Most common ways to improve fuel efficiency and lower CO2 emissions is to provide gas-electric powertrains like we are getting in 2015 BMW ActiveHybrid 3.
Another thing that hybrid powertrain also improves is the performance of vehicle. Both performances and fuel efficiency are improved when we compare this model with a standard version. This is very important for the U.S. buyers that look at the fuel consumption as the number one factor when buying new vehicle.
Let’s start with the hybrid system we have here. Powerful turbocharged gasoline engine draws 300 hp from 3.0 liter displacement unit and its six cylinders while the electric part consists of 55 hp electric motor and 1.3 kWh Lithium Ion battery pack. With usage of ZF eight speed automatic transmission that offers electric motor instead of the torque converter we have one pretty compact system. Same hybrid powertrain is also implemented in ActiveHybrid 5 and ActiveHybrid 7 series models.
Under the floor we have battery pack that weighs about 101 pounds which is slightly less than 50 kg. This battery pack delivers power to electric motor but is also recharged by that electric motor when braking. This system can also send power to air conditioning compressor that is not driven by power of the gasoline motor and as a result we have additional improvements to the efficiency.
2015 BMW ActiveHybrid 3 MPG
As we said the power of the system is higher than with the standard version. The 2015 BMW ActiveHybrid 3 offers 335 hp and 332 lb-ft of torque that is 35 hp and 32 lb-ft of torque more than what we are getting from 335i model. This did not significantly affect performances mainly because the hybrid model is almost 300 pounds heavier. Acceleration from 0 to 60 mph is done in five seconds which is about 0.1 seconds slower than 335i but still is quite fast. The 335i model is rated at 33/23 mpg and with hybrid it is at 35/25 mpg. It is not significant improvement but still can make a difference.
One of the biggest advantages is the fact that you will be able to drive for about 2.5 miles on electric power only. This can be done in slow city traffic or on the roads where lower speed limits are in place. Up to 44 mph this car will use only electric power on a flat road whiles on the downhill it will be able to drive to about 100 mph if the eco-pro mode is selected. One of the things that could further improve fuel economy is the replacement of the turbocharged six cylinder unit with a turbo four.
Buyers that are interested for the 2015 BMW ActiveHybrid 3 will need to pay slightly above $50.000 that represents about $6500 increase over the base 335i version. It will be pretty hard to achieve this amount of savings since the fuel economy is marginally better than with gasoline powered version.
Review Of 2015 BMW ActiveHybrid 3
Both interior and exterior are almost identical to the standard version. Only few small changes are noticeable and if there were no few of those hybrid badges it would be pretty hard to notice that this is a hybrid model. Since this is a luxury sedan main goal was to provide with the same level of luxury and comfort.
