The 2015 BMW i3 is the first production ready car of the ‘i’ series that is announced by BMW. With the launch of i3, BMW announces its foray into the electric mobility market. Electric mobility market that is ruled by Toyota for many years will face a tough competition from this range of BMW cars.
The i3 follows a new design strategy and is based upon the Life Drive architecture, in which the car is made up of three compartments, an aluminium chassis, a carbon fibre passenger cell and thermoplastic body panels, all these contribute to a weight reduction of up to 500 pounds, and the new car weighs just 2600 pounds.
The car is quiet short in length, but can seat two persons comfortably at the rear. The front houses the signature BMW kidney grill which looks very modern, two lines run through the bonnet giving it a sharp look. The dual tone exterior looks pretty interesting and give this car a sporty character. The profile view of this car looks very distinct and nice, the windows runs the whole length of he car and end up just before the tail gate, this new concept looks very appealing. The 19 inch wheels on this car help in imparting a solid stance and improve the road presence of this car.
Review Of 2015 BMW i3
The power comes from a 170 horsepower hybrid synchronous motor that puts 184 foot pounds of torque through the rear wheel drive. It can hit sixty miles per hour in 7 seconds and has a top speed of 93 mph. The motor receives power from a 22 kWh lithium ion battery which is liquid cooled, weighs around 450 pounds and give this car a range of 118 miles.
An optional range extender petrol engine can also be equipped in this car. This 700 cc, 34 BHP petrol engine adds up additional 330 pounds to the car, but extends its range to about 185 miles. This range extender proves to be necessary equipment in case you run out of charge.
The interior of i3 looks ultra modern and very up market. Unlike other BMW’s the interior is kept very minimal and only essential buttons are present in the cabin. It uses a twin floating screen display, one to display information to driver and another 10.2 inch central display that is controlled by the iDrive system. Wood inserts in the dashboard give it a premium look and being a BMW, the quality of material used is top of the line.
The interior space is adequate for driver and front passenger getting sufficient leg space and shoulder room. The rear seems a bit cramped due to permanent closed rear windows and due to the strange rear door opening mechanism which requires front door to be opened before opening the rear door. Some passengers might feel claustrophobic at the rear. Otherwise the seats are very comfortable and it is a pleasure travelling in this car.
Apart from the standard features like steering mounted controls, I Drive system, rear parking camera etc. this car is equipped with many safety features like airbags, ESP, traction control, ABS etc. Some features like automatic collision detection braking system and radar adaptive cruise control system make this car safer than many other vehicles on road.
