As you all know BMW is one of the top car manufacturers in the World. The production quality is at highest level, their engine range goes from a small units like little 1.6 liter engine up to the 6.0 liter V12 engine units found in the Rolls Royce Ghost. This car maker also brings hybrid models and from recently there are electric and range extended models in the lineup.
All the engines had great fuel consumption but what can you do these days, when economy is the norm and all major manufacturers are going on hybrid drive? Well, you build a hybrid super car (range extended) with amazing looks and call it an iCar, more exactly, the 2015 BMW i8. This is BMW’s new car for tomorrow.
The car itself has a striking look, it’s design was inspired by that of the iconic 1978 BMW M1 but adding a modern touch to it. The 2015 BMW i8 has a so-called LifeDrive architecture, and this means that the cockpit of the car is made entirely out of carbon fiber while the part where the two engines sit are made of aluminum, giving the car a total weight of just over 3300 pounds, a bit much for a supercar, but not much at all for the power train! To the weight of a standard chassis we need to add electric motor and battery pack, if this is not added the weight would be significantly lower.
Specs Of 2015 BMW i8
The drivetrain of the car is somewhat unique. Range extended cars have been made before but until now they did not have much success like hybrid and some electric cars. In this petrol engine is being helped by an electric auxiliary motor also, but this car is different. In the front we have an electric motor, with 129 hp and 250 NM which may not seem much for a supercar, and that’s true, but this vehicle also features a petrol engine at the back. It’s a small 3 cylinder, 1.5 liter engine, turbocharged with… wait for it… 228 hp and incredible 320 NM, giving a combined power for this hybrid supercar of 357 hp and 570 NM allowing it to sprint to from 0 to 60 MPH in less than 4.5 seconds and it has a electronically limited top speed of 155 mph.
You would think that this car, even for a hybrid, would use quite a bit of fuel! Well, that’s not true. It has a 7.2 kWh on board battery-pack that will give the car, in ECO mode, a reasonable 22 miles of all-electric range. If the battery drops under a set level or if the driver accelerates suddenly the gasoline engine will start to extend the range and to give the car more power.
The 2015 BMW i8 has a range 310 miles in comfort mode and over 360 miles in ECO mode with performance similar to any electric supercar or any sports car. Also, considering the fact that it gets over 94 MPG combined and less than 59g/km of CO2 emissions, this car is a real winner.
2015 BMW i8 Price
At this point not all details are known about this vehicle and we will have to wait slightly longer for additional info to be offered. One of the most interesting figures is the price and we are pretty sure that it will go higher than $100.000. Far better guess for this supercar is that it would be priced at $130.000 to $150.000.
