At the 2014 Beijing International Automotive Exhibition that starts in the next few weeks we will be getting official presentation of the 2015 Lexus NX. This is one of the highly anticipated models that will provide hybrid powertrain and luxury features that we are used to see from this car maker.
All the way back in January we were able to see few leaked images that were offered “accidentally” and after those we are now getting also few teaser images that are announcing the arrival. There is no doubt that the inspiration came from the LF-NX concept that was unveiled and shown on few previous auto shows. It has received changes so it would be production friendlier but still offers great looks and design. With slight changes that are delivered to the production model it is possible to fit in this car into Lexus lineup.
Review Of 2015 Lexus NX
Top of the line will be the NX 200t or at least that is what we expect to see. This version will come with 2.0 liter turbocharged gasoline unit that should improve fuel economy while delivering great performances. One of the main competitors in this segment will be the Ford Escape powered with EcoBoost unit that did not manage to deliver promised improvements in the fuel economy over the standard naturally aspirated versions. To get info about fuel economy we will have to wait little longer.
More interesting, at least to us, is the information about the hybrid that will be offered. For the 2015 Lexus NX we are getting 2.5 liter four cylinder engine that works on much more efficient Atkinson cycle and is paired with electric motor. Since the similar setup like in the ES 300h is expected to be delivered we assume that the total power of this system will be 200 or even more hp.
Among the things that we do not know and that could affect fuel economy is the battery pack technology that will be used here. There are still no confirmations if the nickel-metal or more modern Lithium-Ion battery pack will be offered. At this moment Toyota still uses decent amount of Nickel Metal hydride units but with the delivery of new Prius that is expected soon they will switch to Lithium-Ion technology that provides lighter batteries that also offer higher efficiency.
We know that similar setup and similar powertrain in Lexus ES 300h is able to return 40/39/40 mpg in city/highway/combined drive cycle. Since the 2015 Lexus NX comes with a slightly taller body and possibly added weight it will be pretty hard to achieve the same fuel economy. With few slight changes to the powertrain, mainly the transition to the Lithium Ion technology, could allow NX hybrid to bring similar or even better fuel economy than ES 300h.
Design language that is used by Lexus is well accepted and there are no reasons to significantly change this with the introduction of this model. What we do expect to see is the less dramatic looks that are more appealing to the eye than it was the case with the concept version of LF-NX. With its spindle grille design that is combined with split level headlights it certainly emphasizes its road presence, refinement, elegance but also the aggressive looks it offers.
2015 Lexus NX Teaser
