When the AMG badge is added to one car it means that it certainly brings fantastic performances thankfully to its powerful gasoline engine. With the 2015 Mercedes SLS AMG Coupe Electric Drive story is slightly different. We are still getting AMG worthy performances but this time from electric powertrain.
Since this is a performance oriented vehicle we will start from powertrain and what it offers. Four electric motors are part of this system and those offer total output of 552 kW and maximum torque of 1000 NM making this most powerful AMG model ever. With this setup it will be possible to accelerate from 0 to 62 mph in about 3.9 seconds and there is no doubt that this is supercar. Also, with this acceleration time it is the fastest production electric vehicle on the market and is in front of Tesla Model S Performance model that can accelerate to 62 mph in about 4.5 seconds.
More on performances, this vehicle has the limited top speed of 155 mph or 250 km/h and thankfully to impressive 1000 NM of torque it will reach high speeds with ease and quite fast. Since the power and torque delivery from electric motors is instantly driver will feel it immediately after the accelerator pedal is pressed. With no interruptions, power is delivered in entire rev range that with these motors go up to 13.000.
Each of these four electric motors has the weight of about 45 kg and is consisted of compact permanent magnets. With this system in the 2015 Mercedes SLS AMG Coupe Electric Drive it is possible to control torque and power delivery to each wheel. This is achieved with the special axially arranged transmission which brings advantage over the wheel hub motors that significantly increase unsprung mass that can significantly affect handling and drivability of the vehicle.
Review Of 2015 Mercedes SLS AMG Coupe Electric Drive
Electric power to motors is delivered from 60 kWh batter pack that can push up to 600 kW instant power. This Lithium Ion battery weighs about 548 kg and when we add the weight of the electric motors it is quite obvious that this system significantly increases the total weight of the vehicle. All the technology has been borrowed from F1 and KERS system that has been developed for the F1 championship. Just like with many hybrid and electric vehicles this battery is charged when decelerating and with the 22 kW charger it is possible to recharge it in about three hours and on the standard outlet it will be needed about 20 hours.
On the outside it is pretty hard to notice the difference between the 2015 Mercedes SLS AMG Coupe Electric Drive and a standard SLS gasoline powered model. We have decent number of smaller specific features that are delivered to the Electric version. Front splitter is delivering huge amount of down force to the front axle and has a fantastic carbon look. Aerodynamics is improved with changes to the air intakes that are now used to cool down the battery pack and carbon ceramic brakes. One of the things that we liked most is the color of this vehicle, it is quite striking and significantly improves the road presence of it so you can be sure that it will be noticed.
Interior also comes with performance oriented details. High quality leather with contrast stitching looks fantastic and all the instruments inside are there to provide all the needed information’s to driver. Things like battery charge, speed, energy consumption and similar are delivered in place of where the rev counter was previously.
2015 Mercedes SLS AMG Coupe Electric Drive Price
One of the things that we do not like about the 2015 Mercedes SLS AMG Coupe Electric Drive is its price that is incredibly high. If you want this vehicle you will need to pay more than 400.000 Euros and for those that are looking for a high performance electric vehicle with even more range we can easily recommend Tesla Model S that costs significantly less and is capable of accelerating from 0 to 62 in about 4.5 seconds.
