It is quite obvious that car makers are trying to deliver better cars and one of the most important segments is the fuel economy. With the 2016 BMW 3 Series eDrive we will be getting plug-in hybrid that will significantly improve fuel efficiency of this lineup while maintaining high performances and lowering CO2 emissions.
Race for better fuel economy already lasts for more than just a few years. Most car makers in Europe prefer diesel powered vehicles that can provide much better fuel economy than the similarly powered petrol units but in Japan, Korea and US we are able to see many electric and hybrid vehicles that thankfully to the electric part of the powertrain can offer much better fuel economy. Even this is nothing new there is a decent number of car makers that are still not that deep and committed to this market.
Over the last couple years we could see a lot of activity from BMW on the hybrid and even electric market segment. As a result we are getting few really great models with hybrid and electric powertrains but it is a fact that they did not offer those vehicles in enough numbers to make a difference. At least until now but after we could hear announcements for the 2016 BMW 3 Series eDrive and other models in the BMW’s lineup we are pretty sure that the things are shifting and changing.
Review Of 2016 BMW 3 Series eDrive
Reports suggest that the 2016 BMW 3 Series eDrive will come equipped with 2.0 liter turbocharged four cylinder engine that will be helped with the electric motor. This is significantly different from the ActiveHybrid3 model that combined 3.0 liter turbo six cylinder unit and electric motor. For the eDrive model it is necessary to come with more powerful electric motor so it could be moved on electric power only.
At this point we still do not have official details about the power output of this system. Looking at the current offer of 2.0 liter turbo units we can predict that it will bring from 200 to 240 hp while the electric motor should add from 60 to 80 hp which will also allow it to move this car on electric power only when needed. There is also possibility for the electric motor to offer even more power since there were announcements that suggest that the powertrain will be offered with components that are similar to both i3 and i8 models.
Just as a reminder, the BMW i8 comes with 96 kW electric motor while the i3 is offered with more powerful 125 kw unit. Range will greatly depend on the battery pack capacity about which we still do not have any details but for this car to be useful it should offer about 20 to 30 miles in EV mode. With these specs it could be possible to attract more buyers and when we take into consideration that most drivers need their cars for shorter commutes it is quite obvious that 20 to 30 miles of EV range could be quite great option.
2016 BMW 3 Series eDrive Specs
Have in mind that these are only rumors but from the BMW representatives we could hear that significantly more power could be offered with future plug-in hybrid systems. The 2016 BMW 3 Series eDrive and other future models could easily offer electric motors with 150 KW and more that will be supplied with 20 kWh battery packs that will provide about 62 miles or 100 km of range and even more. This radical change could significantly lower the fuel consumption and CO2 emissions.
Among the most interesting details that are currently missing from the story about the 2016 BMW 3 Series eDrive are the details about the price and release date. We are sure that most countries will offer decent amount of incentives to those drivers that decide to buy plug-in hybrid like this but we are also sure that those cars will be significantly pricier than the gasoline powered versions. If you are waiting for this model to come to the market you will have to wait at least few more months for it to be officially announced since we do expect it to be released during the summer of 2015th and that sales should start before the end of the next year.
