At the recently closed Detroit Auto Show we could see many new cars but the 2016 Chevrolet Bolt is one of the models that attracted most attention of the green car drivers. This is a subcompact electric car that could be delivered to the market as 2016th model but more likely it will come as 2017th or even 2018th version, depending on when the production starts.
First reports suggested that the production will start all the way back in 2017th but things changed little bit and latest reports suggest that this will be much closer. October of the next year is new assumption but it will be interesting to see if this will be changed again and we do receive this vehicle as 2016th model. These speculations will be put to a side and we will offer details that we currently have.
Among the most important things that were mentioned is the range of the 2016 Chevrolet Bolt. For the concept version that was presented quoted range was 200 miles and we expect this figure to remain on the same level when the final product is delivered. There are no reports about the power of electric motor it will bring or the battery pack capacity. Estimation of the lithium ion battery pack suggests that it will offer about 50 kWh capacity and that this should be enough for 200 miles on single charge. Just like always range and efficiency will be significantly influenced by the driver and weather conditions.
2016 Chevrolet Bolt Range
Another thing that we could hear from official sources is that the price of the new electric car in Chevrolet lineup will be about $37,500. This is quite convenient number since we do know that many states offer incentives for zero emission vehicles like this one and that those rebates and refunds are about $7,500 which leads to the final figure of about $30,000 for the all new EV. Again, similar price and range will be offered by the announced Tesla Model 3 but we still do not have any images or specs of that car that could be a competitor to the Bolt.
Both 2016 Chevrolet Bolt and the Sonic will use the same Gamma architecture that could lower the production cost and really lead it to $30,000 at the end. Since Bolt is EV it will have battery pack located under the floor while Sonic will offer gasoline engine powertrain. When the production starts we know that it will be delivered from assembly plant in Michigan from which Sonic is also delivered. It will be interesting how this all will combine since the production goal for Bolt is 25,000 to 30,000 units per year.
Concept vehicle showed of quite futuristic interior but we are pretty sure that it will be significantly changed for the production version. Exterior changes will be minimal and we will be getting almost identical vehicle like the one we could see in Detroit. With its size and shape it really does reminds us on the BMW i3 but still with enough of its own characteristic lines.
Specs Of 2016 Chevrolet Bolt
When it comes to potential competitors it will be quite interesting to see the layout on the market. There are few potential competitors and certainly one of those is the Tesla Model 3 about which we could hear only rumors but those suggested that it will offer about 200 miles of range and will come with a price tag of about $30,000. This might not be a real competitor because Tesla tried and managed to establish itself as a luxury manufacturer so there could be few other models. Vehicles like Nissan Leaf and BMW i3 could again be even better match but we will need to wait and see.
