Most of those first hybrid and plug-in hybrid powertrains were delivered in smaller vehicles but things are shifting at an incredible pace. What we could hear is that the Mercedes will offer three new plug-in hybrid models by the end of 2015th and will include new S Class, C Class and ML Class Hybrid.
Reports suggest that the first of these three models that will be delivered to the market is the S Class. This will be a high luxury plug-in hybrid and compared to rest of the lineup of hybrids mentioned here will be the most expensive model. California and few other states will most likely see this vehicle delivered during the spring of the next year. Europe will most likely get it first and we do expect it to emerge on European market during this fall.
Top of the line sedan from Mercedes is a true gem and just like always this model will offer all the latest technology available on the market. When it comes to powertrain we will be getting 3.0 liter V6 engine that is refined with turbocharger pumping out 328 hp and this unit will have support from electric motor that will produce 80 kW or 107 hp. Electric unit will be placed between modified eight speed automatic transmission and gasoline unit but the total power is still not known. What we do know is that it will need about 5.5 seconds to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph. One of the things that we really do not like about this vehicle is the possibility that the battery pack will be placed in trunk significantly reducing the usable space of it.
Mercedes Plug-In Hybrids
For the S Class we expect to see about 19 miles or electric range but that is on the European test cycle and EPA results could be slightly lower. Since the C Class is heavier than S Class it will most likely offer few more miles of range if it comes with the same powertrain setup like it is the case with the top of the line sedan. The all new C Class was presented at the Detroit Auto Show in January and we are sure that plug-in hybrid will offer only few small changes.
Third model that we mentioned is the crossover utility vehicle from ML Class which will be refreshed for 2016th. Mercedes will use this mid cycle refresh to introduce new hybrid option and reports say that it will come to the market in similar time like C Class. At this moment only Toyota RAV4 EV offers plug-in possibility and we are waiting for Tesla Model X to be pushed out. With this market structure it is possible for Mercedes to attract more buyers to brand.
Both C Class and S Class will be delivered to the market segment where we already have few decent competitors from BMW, Infiniti, Lexus and similar brands. It will be interesting to see what will be the sale results for these two vehicles. On the other hand ML Class will not have true competitor but we do expect that other car makers will soon offer their entries in this segment.
Price Of Mercedes Hybrids
One of the most interesting things that we do not know about any of these three models is their price tag. We are sure that it will affect the decision of many potential buyers. Have in mind that Mercedes newer offered cheap vehicles and that their models are usually on top of the segment when it comes to price tag but also that they usually offer more than competition.
